Dementia appears to be in decline.

Last month, MediCinema opened a new outpost in Manchester. MediCinema works with hospitals and film distributors offer cinematic experiences inside British hospitals. Given the growing recognition of the impact of patient experience on patient outcomes, the non-profit is one of a number of organisations trying to bridge this gap. [NYTimes]

In North America and Europe, we’ve seen a steep decline in the number of elderly people suffering from dementia. According to a new paper published by Eric Stallard and others, just one in ten Americans aged 85-89 had dementia in 2024, compared to three in ten 40 years ago. Similar trends have been observed in smaller studies, too. The global cost of dementia has been projected to reach $16.9tn by 2050, but this kind of research suggests that these numbers might be overstated, particularly with respect to rich, Western countries.
